INDIAN JEWELRY, EATS TAPES, MNDR, FLEXIONS @ VERA

Last night I went to the Vera Project with a friend to see a show I was anticipating for a long time. Indian Jewelry was a band I saw about 3 years ago at the now defunct S.S. Marie Antoinette with the Get Hustle. At that show Indian Jewelry jammed out so hard, it was pretty intense...I was kind of afraid they wouldn't stop but then jam session came to a sudden end. The singer of Get Hustle also played shirtless at that show and I think that everyone thought it was progressive that she was showing everyone her boobs. Regardless, the show last night was rad. Flexions played a set a songs that made me feel like I was surfing in the future, it ruled. Then MNDR, a band consisting of a girl named Amanda from Oakland and a bunch of cool things like an Omnichord, Pedals and some Samplers played. She had a difficult time because the sound was freaking out and everything sounded glitchy, I wasn't really sure what was going on because all of her instruments were all making noise at the same time and she was screaming about something and freaking out. At one point amidst the confusion I started laughing and had to ask my friend if this was a joke band, she said she didn't think so. I actually ended up talking to MNDR for a bit before EATS TAPES went on and she was really friendly. We talked about her set and I asked her how she felt about the sound and she said she was actually stoked on it because it reminded her of this noise band from Cincinnati called Hair Police. She gave me her CD and a kerchief with MNDR written all over it. Then EATS TAPES started playing and it was basically just a long set of techno. I danced but it was totally whatever. After a long while Indian Jewelry started setting up and eventually played. It started out by the drummer placing a strobe light under the floor tom and turning off all the lights while the guitars were droning out and the "noise" player was doing some trippy shit on a MicroKorg. It was visually captivating while at the same time gave me a headache. I would say that during their set I was bored half the time and the other half I had my mind blown. The guy singer/lead guitarist of the band made me feel like he wants to be Jim Morrison which was a little off putting and the other guitar player was wearing a sassy poncho. They were cool but I feel like you need to be in a very specific mood to really enjoy it. I definitely would see them again.
